S.R.M. - Scale Raceway Models

Available in Great Britain in the early 1960s, S.R.M. slot car sets are a pretty rare find today. Consisting of 1:40 scale Grands Prix racers like the B.R.M and Cooper, they also offered a "trick-track". As far as we know, only 3 slot cars and a single set was offered before Scale Raceway Models' demise.

Scale Raceway Models Slot Cars

Here's a description of their 1964 set from their literature:

Hand Accelerator Controlled Electric Raceway

S.R.M. offer you all the excitement of real racing to be enjoyed safely in the comfort of your home. Each car is completely under the control of its driver from start to finish. Power slides, controlled drifts, flat out along the straight, dicing for the lead make every race a thrill. Scale speed's of up to 240 m.p.h. can be obtained.

Hobby activities are usually limited by space but the S.R.M. scale and track offer very compact multi-lane circuits which give realistic and exciting racing in the minimum amount of space. A very fine circuit can be laid on the dining-room table, the standard two lane figure eight circuit only requires 1 ft. 8 in. x 3 ft. 11 in., whilst the minimum four lane figure 8 circuit requires 2 ft. 7 in. x 4 ft. 11 in., and the minimum six lane figure 8 circuit 3 ft. 5 in. x 6 ft. 8 in. Scale size does not always mean very much except to the established modeller, so let us just add that in our 1:40th scale a man 5 ft. 10 in. tall would be exactly 1 in. high. The ½ in. S.R.M. armature motor gives meaning to the authentic racing models, it is the smallest and most efficient ever fitted into any model racing car and will contribute to hours of competitive racing with the minimum of servicing.

Grand Prix cars available are the B.R.M., Lotus and Cooper which measure only 3.1 in. long. They reproduce the extremely low slung appearance of the modern G.P. car to perfection and are the smallest cars in the world to offer fully steering front axles and the only cars with allround independent suspension, so that the fully sprung performance of the original cars is faithfully reproduced. Great trouble has been devoted to the fine plastic bodies which model the originals in considerable detail including windscreen, exhausts and, of course, the driver. Simple braid pick-ups collect the current from the track and are unaffected by rough handling.

We believe our new S.R.M. track is the finest yet devised. Stout grey polystyrene plastic is the basic material into which "T" section brass pick-up strip is fitted, slightly away from the slot edges so that utmost spin and slide of cars is permitted. Electric continuity is assured by berylium copper springs, the ends of which are concealed and so offer no assembly hazards. Special interlocking claws locate and lock sections in one movement yet may be simply disengaged at will. For those desiring more than two lane racing additional slots and claws enable the track sides to be locked together so that all track sections are held together. Larger radius curves enable these four and six lane tracks to be constructed. Elegant crash barriers fit into sockets provided on all curves.

The S.R.M. speed controller is a precision instrument for model car racing, little larger than the ordinary matchbox and form-fitting to the hand. In addition to the normal instant range of speeds from stop to full speed, the controller can be set in any of four speeds and additionally there is a fine adjustment for each speed.

The set is for use with transformer or batteries and requires 12 volts D.C. at 1 Amp.
