When the Corvette began in 1953, it was the world's first car in relatively large scale production to have a body of glass reinforced polyester. It has a tuned 6-cylinder Chevrolet engine of just under 4-litres. The latest Stingrays are built to full Grand Touring specifications.
Shorter than the early models and styled to look slightly European, the Stingray now packs a tuned 5.8-litre engine with Rochester fuel-injection and independent suspension. Although the car has tremendous acceleration, its road holdings not quite up to the standard required for European tracks. It has been successful in competition but rarely appears outside the U.S A. 1960 was an exception. Four (1967) Corvettes were entered at Le Mans, two of them finishing in 8th and 10th position.
