The Mercedes-Benz 220S & 220SE are the result of achievement and experience gained largely in racing and rallying. Its rear swingaxle is derived from the highly successful 300 SLR sports racers of 1955. The 220 has proved itself to be an exceptional rally car. The Mercedes team gained 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in the Tulip, Acropolis and Polish Rallies.
The 1960 European Rally championship went to drivers Schock and Moll in their 220 SE. In 1961 the Mercedes 220's put up impressive performances in the Central African and the gruelling East African Safari, probably the most destructive test yet devised for a car!
