Mercedes 300 SL

In 1952 Mercedes rolled out three gull-wing door prototypes onto the track to compete in the Prix de Berne. It was their first racing appearance The race ended with the Mercedes in first and second places. Later that same year, at Le Mans the 300 SL's again took the first two places.

Private owners had to wait till 1954 however, for the 300 SL to become available commercially. It was produced as a coupe or roadster. The coupe retained the gull-wing doors of the prototypes A racing version, the 300 SLR won for Mercedes the coveted World Constructors Championship in 1955. Among their many victories, probably their most outstanding racing success was Stirling Moss's brilliant win in the Italian Mille Miglia of 1955.
