Monogram 1965 Porsche 904 Assembly Sheet

Carrera 904 Grand Touring Sports Car

The Porsche 904 is specifically a Grand Touring Sports car conforming with all of the F.I.A.'s (Federation Internationale de ('Automobile) requirements. Porsche's have successfully dominated the under-two-liter-category in racing since that first Porsche 550 Spyder sports racer. Although the 904 is not in the sports/racing class as was the 550, it is in keeping with the current emphasis in international racing of Grand Touring cars and with Porsche's continued interest in winning. Racing and winning, so it seems, sells cars. Released at the onset of the 1964 racing season the new Porsche 904, on it's first outing, finished first in class at Daytona, first in class at Sebring, and first and second overall at the Targa Florio.

An impressive beginning to say the least.

The aerodynamically styled body, is fiberglass, permanently bonded to a box type chassis. Under the rear hood sits the main source of the 904's success, an improved four cylinder, 2-liter (1966 cc) version, of the double overhead cam Carrera, delivering 198 bhp (SAE) at 7,000 rpm. The performance of this 1500 pound package on its 90.5 inch wheelbase is capable of speeds in excess of 150 mph and accelerating from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. The gearbox is an all synchro 5-speed of Porsche design. The suspension is a departure from the conventional Porsche sports car variety, but instead an interesting adaption of the Porsche Fl car type. And to hold it all in check, we find Porsche-ATE disc brakes at both front and rear.

All of the fine details of this winner have been faithfully reproduced in the Monogram 1:32 scale kit. This kit included additional plastic parts so that the model could be built in one of two ways. One as a scale display model and the other as a scale slot racing body shell. The display model features bucket interior with shift lever and steering wheel, complete underbody, plated wheels, and rubber tires. The slot racing body shell includes platform interior with driver and steering wheel, chassis mounts, and plated wheel inserts for that complete scale appearance. Also included for either version was a clear window insert, clear headlight covers, plated racing mirror, and decal sheet with authentic race car emblems.

The Monogram Porsche 904 was designed from photos and measurements of an actual car. All of the parts were scaled exactly to insure accuracy of detail.
