K&B Slot Cars

K&B was purchased by Aurora and manufactured 1:24 and 1:25 scale slot cars, as well as a large range of parts for 1/24 and 1/32 scale cars in the 1960s.

The first K&B cars used the "made in USA" Challenger and Super Challenger motors, although they also quickly offered the more competitive Mabuchi style "can" motors: Bobcat, Wildcat, Cougar and Jaguar. They also made a last attempt with a US-made motor called the Hellcat, also a "can" style motor. Their later cars were powered by either the Hellcat or the Jaguar.

Perhaps the most coveted model is the K&B Batmobile, of which only 12 Mint-in-Box versions are known to exist. In 2008, two of the rare Batmobile slot cars changed hand for prices exceeding $6000.

The Fabulous Challenger Motor

The K&B Challenger motor was marketed as "The Fabulous Challenger Motor" which was similar to parent Aurora's slogan "The Fabulous Pancake Motor".

The K&B Challenger sidewinder motor is manufactured in the U.S.A. and has been tested under the most rigid operating conditions on all track configurations. More power and torque than any other comparable motor. Proper installation and care will assure you excellent performance and long motor life.

The K&B Royal Bobcat was developed by a team of engineers both at the K&B plant and at the Mabuchi Company in Japan. This unit boasts a special commutator and powerful ceramic magnets. The windings are for a 9 volt operations to give maximum R.P.M. and torque. Brass mounting brackets are provided for installation of bearings, axle and chassis members. With proper installation and care the Royal Bobcat will provide excellent performance for your racing needs.

K&B Maintenance Tips

  1. Oil rear shaft bearings only, after each hour of driving. Use one drop of PIT STOP speed oil. CAUTION: "If front bearing is oiled, oil will work into the commutator and burn out motor."
  2. It is important that the gear mesh and alignment is correct.
  3. Make sure the rear axle spins freely in the axle bushings. Check frame alignment at bushing points.
  4. Clean entire motor periodically with cleaning solvent such as spot remover or carbon tetrachloride. Let cleaning solvent dry completely before running.

K&B Racing Tips

  1. Gear ratios for most 1:32 scale cars should be 3.5 to 1 or higher. For 1:25 scale cars, we recommend crown or bevel 3 to 1 or higher.
  2. Frame and body should be as light as possible.
  3. Low center of gravity, proper gear fit and alignment are necessary for top performance.
  4. Remember - The care you use in construction of your racing car will determine its performance.
