Wiring a Slot Car Track for 4 Lanes

This large JPG diagram is one of the most complete and easiest-to-understand schematics we've run across when it comes to wiring a slot car track for four lanes.

The schematic above supports a brake cut-out switch and a reverse polarity circuit to allow the track to operate in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.

It also demonstrates how to properly set up power distribution blocks and drivers stations.

You can get pretty creative with drivers stations and they have the possibility of making any track more memorable! Drivers stations should also be built knowing that they will take quite a bit of abuse if you plan on hosting racing events for your neighbors or local slot car racing club.
Alway use quality, heavy duty components to ensure long life.

You should always use the highest quality components your wallet will allow when assembling and wiring your new slot car track. Spending patient time up-front in your larger hobby projects to collect the right components and connectors. Combined with proper planning and care upon assembly, your care will ensure that your track will give years of faithful, reliable and trouble-free satisfaction.

If you know someone with a track, try to visit it and talk to the owner about the assembly of their track. A great question to ask is "What would you do differently next time?"

Take the time to solder all critical connections to avoid electrical "suprises" during a race. The upper right hand corner of this schematic also mentions providing proper power distribution around your track by providing additional power taps. The practice of taking the time and expense to provide power to the track rails every 8 to 14 feet will ensure that you'll be providing each lane with plenty of power as your track's rail connectors age and oxidize.

If your table surface will be made up of multiple sheets of plywood or MDF, take the time to ensure that there is a lasting and level transition between any boards that meet.

Following the guideline above when assembling your first, or next, track will not only guarantee a successful project but be more enjoyable for those who race on it.
